Chinese grandpa was invariably strict with his children. Hawaiian grandma was "soft" and sympathetic, but the two agreed upon teaching their children respect for older people.
Chinese grandpa had been taught that a man's first duty throughout his life was to his parents.
Respect for the parents was taught the young through many legendary or true life stories.
Chew Choi Tong Gee, a youth god, is [worshipped] or remembered on the 20th day of the first month.
FARMER'S SON
Chew was a farmer's son who lived many, many years ago in old China.
His father had died while he was a baby and he was raised as an only child by his mother. She pampered an spoiled him until he became an ugly brat.
Because the mother was poor, the boy had to go to work while he was yet very young on the farm.
His mother prepared a hot meal for him each midday and carried the food into the field where he was working.
WORST THING
Being a bad tempered boy and hating his work, Chew mistreated his mother. If she was late with his lunch, he would strike her - the very worst thing a boy could do to his mother.
One day the boy loafed in the field. He spent his time watching a mother bird hunt for worms and busily fed its baby in the nest.
Chew began to think about his own mother and suddenly realized she too, worked hard to feed him and care for him.
His thinking gave him a change of heart and he made a vow to be good to his mother and to show her appreciation for all she had done.
CHANGE OF HEART
He realized a change of attitude and attempt to do good would wipe out all the evil deeds of the past.
Just then, Chew saw his mother coming across the fields with his lunch. Although she was late, Chew ran toward her with outstretched arms intending to save her footsteps.
The poor mother was frightened. She thought her son was coming to beat her. She dropped the food and turned to flee. She tripped, fell and killed herself.
Filled with remorse, chew wept until he died.
