ABOUT HTR

Aloha mai kaua! My name is Raene Kaleinani Keliipuleole (Aki). I'm a Native Hawaiian who takes an interest in learning about the way Hawaii lived before and after the world discovered the Islands. This blog is a learning platform for me (and for anyone who would like to join me) to take a step into the past, see into the lives of diverse peoples living in Hawaii, learn about Hawaii-an lifestyles then, and whatever else there is to absorb about Hawaii's past.

The excerpts you read here were a featured series printed in the Honolulu Star Bulletin newspaper submitted by columnist, Clarice B. Taylor, in a titled series called Tales about Hawaii that dates from the 1950's. I am simply retyping to retell these unique stories of Hawaii history, cultures and ways of thinking.

Readers keep in mind, when playing the visuals in your mind as you read each excerpt, the author is telling her story from the influence of her time period, her personal background and hear-say. Therefore, feel free to make your own discernment of what is factual or otherwise.

How "Hawaii Tales Retold" Was Conceived
When my Grandmother, Anna May Nawili Palama (Swain) passed away in the year 2000, her belongings were treasured with newspaper clippings of genealogy, recipes and news articles of interest to her. One night,10 years later, I pulled out a folder with clippings from Tales about Hawaii that Grandma had saved during 1957 and 1959. I became very interested in reading the short stories that allowed me to step back in time and wander about old Hawaii barefoot in my mind.

I'm in search for the entire collection written by Clarice B. Taylor. I love these short stories and created this blog to share her literary contribution of Hawaii's dynamic histories.

I have never read the collection before and will learn about each literary piece as I type it into this blog. My approach to these articles is as a learner not an expert.

Whenever possible, my own photos and  photos/images from other sources (referenced) will accompany some of the posts to add some interest. After select posts, I' may write pondering comments that are "entirely my own opinion or observation" and are not to be taken as fact. Please feel free to comment as I am open to other possibilities and to the thoughts of others.

I don't quite know what shape this work will take, only time will tell.

Me ke aloha pumehana,

Raene Kaleinani
