► Chinese Lore for Chinese-Hawaiians - 13: Red Face Portents

Honolulu Star Bulletin. Monday, February 18, 1957 - Tales about Hawaii, Clarice B. Taylor

Chinese Character Clock
Sudden flushing of the face was an omen of some event to Chinese Grandpa. He knew these omens as a rule, but if he did not, he could find them in the Chinese Almanac.

It did not matter whether the flush  occurred on the cheek or both sides of the face. The portent depended upon the hour the flush occurred.

First hour (11 p.m. to 1 a.m.) you are about to receive some unexpected money.

Second hour (1 to 3 a.m.) worrisome affairs are troubling you.

Third hour (3 to 5 a.m) Guests from afar are arriving with auspicious news.

Fourth hour (5 to 7 a.m.) guests are arriving with whom you will drink and dine.

Fifth hour (7 to 9 a.m.) you will welcome and enjoy guests from a distance.

AUSPICIOUS MEETING

Sixth hour (9 to 11 a.m) An important event will occur.

Seventh hour (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) A relative is coming with good news.

Eighth hour (1 to 3 p.m.) You will engage in a heated argument.

Ninth hour (3 p.m. to 5 p.m.) You will meet a benefactor on the road.

DISTANT GUEST

Tenth hour (5 to 7 p.m.) someone from afar is coming - an auspicious event.

Eleventh hour (7 to 9 p.m.) You will be invited to dinner by a person wanting a favor in return.

Twelfth hour (9 to 11 p.m.) You will be involved in a serious argument which will lead to a lawsuit.
