► Chinese Lore for Chinese-Hawaiians - 14: Sneezing

Honolulu Star Bulletin. Tuesday, February 19, 1957 - Tales about Hawaii, Clarice B. Taylor

If your Chinese grandpa awakened with a sneeze during the night or if he sneezed anytime during the day, he knew the sneeze was a portent of some event to come.

The portents are all listed in today's Chinese Almanac just as they were in Grandpa's day.

The portent depended upon the hour the sneeze occurred.

The first hour (11 p.m. to 1 a.m.) You will have a happy time at a dinner party.

The second hour (1 to 3 a.m.) A - You are in the thoughts of a lady. B - A guest is coming to ask a favor.

FEMALE ACQUAINTANCE

Third hour (3 to 5 a.m.) You will meet a lady and have dinner with her.

Fourth hour (5 to 7 a.m.) A - You will receive unexpected money. B - Someone is coming to ask a favor.

Fifth hour (7 to 9 a.m) You will "eat all day." (You will have more than one dinner).

MONEY TALK

Sixth hour (9 to 11 a.m.)  A benefactor is coming to talk about money.

Seventh hour (11 to 1 p.m.)  A distinguished guest from afar is coming for dinner.

Eighth hour (1 to 3 p.m.) Your attendance at a dinner will be auspicious.

Ninth hour (3 to 5 p.m.) You will have indigestion and a nightmare.

Tenth hour (5 to 7 p.m.) A lady is coming to acquire about something.

Eleventh hour ( 7 to 9 p.m.) [A] lady is thinking of a meeting with you. (Attention wives: be sure and double lock the doors.)

Twelfth hour (9 to 11 p.m.) You have had an "empty" fright for nothing. The event which frightened you was really auspicious.
