KALAWAINUI KALUHIKAI, HIS GENEALOGY

Hidden Alii, No 19

     In order to show the relationship of the Hidden Alii, Kalawainui Kaluhikai, and the family of Queen Emma, we shall recapitulate their genealogy and include the names of alii who were not mentioned in the story.

     The chart starts with Keawe II, King of Hawaii, and his wife, Lonomaikanaka just like the Queen's.

     Kalaninuiamamao (k) ia Ahia Kalanikumaikiekie (w), same as the Queen's.

     Kekunuialaimoku (k) ia Kalaninuiokalani (w), Queen's ancestor.

     Kalikookalani (w), Queen's ancestor, ia Kahoalii I (k), whose real name was Kalaninuikaleleau.

     Kahoalii II (k) ia Moakeawe (w) and had two sons, Kalawaianui and Kauhola.

     Kalawaianui (k) ia Nawai (w) had three children, Kaluhikai, the Hidden Alii, Wahineikaili (w)  and a daughter Kaoanaeha, namesake of the Kaoanaeha who married John Young.

     Kaluhikai, the Hidden Alii, ia Kalehua (w) of Waianae, and had Fanny Malulani Kahoalii, Maude Niaupio, Liliha and Alexander.

     Wahineikaili had no children.

     Kaoanaeha ia Aarona and had two sons, Alexander Liliha and C. Kauhola.

     Fanny Malulani Kahoalii ia Abraham St. Chad Piianaia and had  1- Grace Kiowai Kamaikui, 2- Maude Niaupio, 3- Gordon Heulumanawaokalani, 4- Stella Kalikookalani.

COMMON ANCESTORS
     A study of this genealogy shows the common ancestor of the Queen and the Piianaia family to be Kalikookalani (The Bud of Heaven). She was the mother of both of Kahoalii II and Kaoanaeha.

MRS. ANNE HALL
     Kahaipu-o-keku-haupio-ike -kanaka, the man who told Queen Emma the story of the Hidden Alii was related to the Queen's family through Kahoalii I. Kalaniwahine, a sister of Kahoalii was the ancestor of Kauhaipu.

     The story of the Hidden Alii had been forgotten by most modern Hawaiians and was only recently retold by Mrs. Anne Peleioholani Hall, granddaughter of Kauhaipuokekuhaupioikekanaka.

     Mrs. Hall's story was confirmed when Abraham Piianaia produced the genealogical tables of his grandfather, Abraham St. Chad Piianaia.

Piianaia Family, Queen's Relatives

No. 11, Hidden Alii

     When Fanny Malulani Kaho'alii, daughter of the hidden alii, met Abraham St. Chad Piianaia, she became acquainted with another branch of Queen Emma's family.

     Abraham St. Chad Piianaia was a junior member of the senior branch of the family which reckoned its geneology straight back to the kings who ruled the Big Island between the 11th and 18th centuries.

     The name Piianaia has two meanings. Literally, it means "the season when the mullet break from the water." Sybolically, it means "the men who follow the beautiful women."  The name is also the answer to the Hawaiian riddle, "men or fish."

KAMEHAMEHA'S NEPHEW

     The first modern Piianaia was a son born to Keliimaikai, full brother of Kamehameha I, and his wife Nunehiwaokalani. Piianaia was a half brother of Kekuaokalani, last defender of the ancient faith and Kaoanaeha, wife of John Young and grandmother of Queen Emma.

     Most important was the fact that he was a paternal nephew of Kamehameha I; his grandfather Keoua being the father of Kamehameha. 

     The geneolgy of the first Piianaia's mother Nunehiwaokalani has been lost, but her name tells us she was the daughter of a high priest. Her name means that at the time fo her birth their were whisperings of scandal and that her family was not afraid of scandal.

     They name the child "the whisperings" and so dared the scandal-mongers to talk openly about her.

     Piianaia had two daughters by a wife Kina whose real name was Kekupuo-i-kamai-kalani (The offspring of Kamai). The daughters were Kalilioku and Ulaloha.

THE FAMILY

     Abraham St. Chad Piianaia was the second of Kalilioku's six children. His brothers and sisters were:Ulualoha (Offspring of Love) who was named for her childless aunt Ulualoha; Alexandria Kalilioku, called Alania. Kiakiakoi (Master Priest of an Order of Physicians); Keliihooluhi (The Weary and Overburdened Chief); and Kamoonohu (God of the Nohu, a small fish living in sea rocks).

     Kalilioku was an old family name meaning "The Pride of Kalilimoku." Several members of the family had been guardians of the national war god Kukalilimoku. The name was given either a boy or a girl in each generation of the family.

     No one outsde the family could use the name.

     The position of the human god and enforcer of the kapus, Kamoho[l]aii, seems to have been filled by one man at a time until the reign fo Kamehameha I (1782-1819).

     Since the human god was so important, the position was generally held by a younger son or a grandson of the king. Kamohoalii therefore was of the highest alii blood but of a junior line. as a member of the ruling family, he helped bolster the authority of the king.

     When Kamehameha became ruler of Kona on the Big Island, Kamohoalii was a priest whose real name was Kalani-nui-Kaleleau (The great prince Kaleleau). When he took the part of thehuma god in releigious services, he was called Kaho-alii (an elided form of Kamohialii). When he acted as marshall for the kapus, he was called Moopu'u. In geneologies he is either Kaho'alii I (Peer of the King) or Moopu'u I.

KALIKOOLANI

     The wife of his youth was the high born chiefess Kalikookalani, great granddaughter of King Keawe who ruled the Island of Hawaii about 1700. Their child was a son named Kama-alo. He was commonly called Kaho'alii II, as he was his father's successor in that office.

     During the time of Kamehameha the position of human god and marshal of the kapus became too big a job for one man, so the position was divided between two men.

     Kaho'alii II retained his father's position as the priest human god and his cousin was made marshal of the kapus and was called Moopu'u II.The two traveled together.

     Kaho'alii II has a son named Kalawainui and he in turn had a son of the same name. This child, Kalawainui II, was raised by Moopu'u II as his foster son.

     Moopu'u II and Kalai nui II are the chief characters that figure in our story of the hidden alii.

QUEEN'S RELATIONSHIP

     Queen Emma and her mother Kekala considered the family of Kalawainui I to be their closest relatives for the reason that Kalawainui's grandmother Kalikookalani  was also Queen Emma's ancestor.

     When Kalawainui was growing up, his grandmother Kalikoolani (Bud of Heaven) has married Keliimaikai (Kalanimalo-kuloku-i-ke-pookalani), full brother of Kamehameha I. By Keliimaikai (The Good Chief) Kallikookalani had two children. They were a boy, Kekuaokalani and a girl Kaoanaeha.

    Kekuao(a)kalani, like his father grew up to be a priest and eventually died defending the old faith. The girl, Kaoanaeha, was given by Kamehameha to the Englishman John Young at the age of 8. She was the mother of Kekela and grandmother of Queen Emma. Kaoanaeha was aunt to the hidden alii.
